There are a lot of special moments that you need to face it. A new nurse gets scared when a doctor yells an old nurse yells black. Moreover, this is a very important one. I have to agree and disagree with some of the previous comments. Nurses get tired and make mistakes just like everyone else. Too bad you try to punish them for being human. Or is it that you think you’re superhuman and wouldn’t have made a certain mistake.

Learning is a lifelong journey. Especially in an ICU setting. We all have made mistakes and we all have learned from them. Keep reading and keep learning. Keep striving to be better. The patients, your coworkers and you deserve it. I went to my manager and told her that I felt stupid and knew nothing coming out of nursing school. I worked at z cardiothoracic floor. She gave me the option of resigning or she would let me go because I should have known how to do an Amiodarone drip by myself just coming out of school and having 4 weeks of orientation. We never did a single drip while I was in orientation. I have regretted nursing ever since and I am terrified of floor nursing. Remembering that during those 2 years is a challenge. Best of luck to all of you starting out in critical care, precepting in critical care, and still hitting the floor there every day. This is not my field hats off my lovely nurses who chose this. This area is definitely not for the weak. The hospitals where I live build facilities that look like palaces and yet refuse to make nurse or patient ratios safe.
Don’t be afraid of it
Nurses want to practice the way they were taught. Once you get your license, you have to put on roller skates and pray for the end of the shift! A new nurse gets scared when a doctor yells an old nurse yells black. Nurses need better compensation for what they do, then they would be able to work one job and makes ends meet. If you have to and don’t want to, then move somewhere that you can afford to kit work that second job. This isn’t rocketed science people. As a nurse with over a decade of experience, I still make less than a truck driver for Walmart. It is unfortunate that a female-dominated profession is still highly exploited in offering inadequate wages which leads to unsafe excess of working hours. I will not be going back to an 8 hour day. Maybe when I’m near retirement. Those 8 hours shifts exhaust me, and I always feel so rushed! I never have enough time to get in everything that needs to be done when charting is so tedious. Look up some studies done on night shift workers and predisposition to ailments. Specifically metabolic syndrome and circadian rhythm disruption.
It’s gonna be fine
